Birds We Breed

It is an inbuilt instinct that directs all birds to breed, some are easier to breed and others more difficult. Breeding birds, especially the large cockatoos are a challenge to aviculturalist. Providing the right conditions assists birds’ natural instinct to breed.

We believe that as responsible aviculturalist we must provide a number of basic aspects such as appropiate housing (aviaries), nesting places, security, hygiene & correct various diets for the different types of birds. All these basics facilitate the breeding process. Successfully breeding from any type of bird, requires dedication to the different species individual needs. Not all birds breed at the same time during the year, but they must be in prime condition before they can lay eggs or produce young chicks.

The types of native birds we breed can be found wild in different areas, states and regions. There are many documented observations and studies recorded proving that birds of one type can differ within the species, with varying different sizes, colouration and characheristics. It is important to the preservation of the different species that each type and species be kept as pure to type as possible when in aviaries. Throughout all our aviaries, we maintain the separation of the species and house the different types of birds in pairs of the same species and sub-species.

All the birds that we breed from have been obtained as young birds either surgically sexed or DNA feather sexed unless obviously apparent they are are a pair. We have the best breeding results from pairing young immature birds. We always check for compatibility, and make sure that neighbouring birds are a different species. Having more than one pair of each species and sub-species encourages breeding and reduces inbreeding when pairing up young. When we have an oversupply of one species, we offer the young for sale. To prevent inbreeding on occassions we source from reputable aviculturalist young birds to pair up with the species that we have difficulty in breeding.

The acceptable aviary size depending on bird type is essential for bird health and provides an environment that is conducive to successful healthy breeding of all birds. It is a priority to house birds in an aviary large enough to give birds’ adequate exercise with enough shelter. Exercise prevents obesity, boredom and lethargy, which in most cases causes infertility and egg binding often resulting also in death. Even in an environment providing the best conditions for breeding, the climate, vermin and other uncontrollable factors can affect the successful aviary breeding.

Breeding healthy robust, active fledgling cockatoos is a tremendous reward.
